Kathmandu, Aug 20 : Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Upendra Yadav has said the Bheri Hospital would be developed as the best and specialized hospital in State 5. However, there was no plan at present to make it a teaching hospital, he added.
In response to the lawmakers’ queries relating to the upgrading of hospitals at the meeting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, DPM Yadav informed that government had initiated works on upgrading the hospital two years back. The Bheri Hospital could be developed into the teaching hospital in the future, added.
In the meeting, lawmaker Mahendra Ray Yadav had questioned how long it would take to upgrade current Bheri zonal Hospital to the teaching hospital.
Lawmaker Prem Suwal brought the reference of Prime Minister’s visits to Singapore for treatment and asked why the government failed to provide treatment to all sorts of diseases within the country. He expressed concern over growing cost to common people to get health service, while the government hospitals in the capital city were left unused and damaged, and the specialized doctors providing service at expensive hospitals.
In response, the DPM said many diseases were treated in the country, and the Prime Minister was visiting Singapore at the recommendation of the doctors here.
Similarly, he informed that Gajendra Narayan Singh hospital was being developed into the Ramraja Institute of Health Sciences, and budget for this was allocated.
According to him, the legal provision of ‘one doctor one hospital’ was brought to implementation to discourage specialized doctors’ shirking duty at government hospitals by visiting the luxurious ones.
It was also informed in the meeting that of the total medicines consumed in Nepal, some 40 percent was produced within the country. The raw materials of the medicines produced in Nepal were imported from China.
In the meeting, lawmaker Mahesh Basnet drew the attention of the government towards the irregularities reported in Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital.
