Most hospitals fail to report data on use of blood

Kathmandu, March 6: Most of the government and private hospitals have been found failed to report to the government the data on the use of human blood although they are bound by a provision to do so. Hospitals are bound to report data on the use of human blood annually to the Ministry of Health and Population, and the National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL).

The National Academy of Medical Sciences and Bir Hospital are reported to be using the most quantity of human blood. Blood is sought excessively for cancer patients, delivery and kidney transplant in particular.

Meanwhile, the NPHL has made public Haemo Vigilance Report, 2018 amid a programme here. Shahid Gangalal National Heart Centre and Om Hospital failed to provide data on their procedures covering the entire blood transfusion chain for the report.

Presenting the report, the NPHL Director Prof Dr Harish Chandra Upreti stressed the need to focus on safety measures in collecting and transfusing blood.
