Major parties vow to work in unity for federalism, republic

Kathmandu, Aug 20 : Major political parties have vowed to work in unity for the protection of federalism, republic, democratic system, and constitution.

At the all-party meeting called by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli at his residence in Baluwatar on Tuesday, the big parties committed to working together for the latest democratic achievements, reasoning that the republic, federalism, and constitution were getting targeted from one or the other side, said Nepal Communist Party Spokesperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha.

He further said President of the major opposition Nepali Congress, Sher Bahadur Deuba, central Chairman of Socialist Party Nepal, Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, and other leaders viewed that they were united in terms of the protection of federalism, republic, and constitution. He quoted them as saying, “We can’t tolerate any attack on these achievements.”

Similarly, quoting the Prime Minister Oli, Spokesperson Shrestha said none can incite violence as the country has already embraced the peace process following a decade long conflict. The activities against the constitution must be tamed through dialogue and law, he added.

Spokesperson Shrestha informed that PM Oli had called for an all-party meeting to bridge the distance among the political parties as well as to forge unity and collaboration among the political parties for the greater good of the country.

Shrestha said that the participants discussed the prospects of the displaced forces that could be on the prowl at any time on the current governing system.

“We all should be aware of the regression that could take a toll on the governance system at any time,” he said, informing that another meeting was called tomorrow which would dwell on the peace process.

Similarly, NC leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula commented that NC had taken the PM’s call for all-parties meeting positively. According to him, this was the first such meeting summoned by the PM since he assumed his office.

Sitaula informed that the PM appeared to be flexible and had presented his views flexibly during the meeting whilst expecting the politicians furnish their recommendations.

According to him, today’s consensus had set a precedent that the country could be ushered forward through the changes achieved after the struggles of the political parties.

He said that concluding peace process formally was the conclusion of the meeting today while another meeting would dwell on sorting out the issues relating to the appointment of the office-bearers at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons to end the remaining process of the peace process.

During the meeting, Rastriya Janata Party presidium’s coordinator Raj Kishore Yadav had said that the constitution of Nepal was promulgated on the base of the political struggle waged by all the political parties in the country.

According to him, all the political parties had reaffirmed their honesty and faithfulness to the democracy, federalism and state affairs.

Present in the meeting were NCP’s Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, NCP Secretariat member Jhalanath Khanal, NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba, Socialist Party Nepal’s Chair Upendra Yadav and federal Chair of Socialist Party Dr. Baburam Bhattarai as well as Rastriya Prajatantra Party leader Mahantha Thakur.
