Kathmandu, Sept 13, Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Giriraj Mani Pokharel, has urged the civil society not to be engaged in politics in the name of civil society. The Education Minister said this while holding discussions with the newly-elected working committee of the National Campaign for Education (NCE), a network of educational organizations, at his office in Singha Durbar today.
He said the civil society has a role different from its traditional one in the changed context with the government giving high priority to strengthening the public education, urging the civil society for collaboration by internalizing this spirit. “It is also seen that the civil consciousness and the civil society ar moving ahead in different directions.
Many organizations are Kathmandu-centred without reaching the local level and are carrying out works other than education in the name of education. It is necessary to change this style,” he said. The Minister stressed that the critical support from the civil society should be constructive rather than destructive and suggested the campaigners not to be influenced by ulterior motives.
Stating that the national education policy would be introduced for strengthening the public education, he said Nepal has made notable progress in the student enrollment rate and gender equality under the sustainable development goals. “The government is working for bringing a revolution in learning for quality education.
It has taken the approval in principle from the Council of Ministers regarding re-distribution of teachers’ posts and the bills related to the National Science Policy and the Bidushi Yogmaya Ayurveda University,” he said. NCE Nepal chair Dilliram Subedi emphasized on the need of bringing the education policy and the Federal Education Act at the earliest being focused on public education.
He called for facilitation by the government for the implementation of the educational rights of the local levels. On the occasion, 17points related to reforms in the contemporary education passed by the Sixth National Convention of NCE Nepal were handed to Minister Pokharel. NCE Nepal’s sixth national convention had concluded on September 7.
